How do we know if the mangoes are ripe?
There are 2 basic indicators to understand if the
mangoes are ripe.
- Colour – Most
of the varieties are ripe when they turn yellow & slightly soft. Juice varieties are
an exception, they may turn yellow but one needs to wait till they emanate
sweet aroma to be perfect for consuming. A day earlier the mango would be
tangier than sweet.
- Aroma – Mangoes give out a
sweet smell when ripe. Especially Himayat might be greenish yellow
but if it emanates a heavenly aroma, it’s ripe.
What care is to be taken after receiving the box?
Kindly check the mangoes, if you find ripe ones,
they can be consumed immediately. Semi ripe mangoes can be left in the box
without tapes so that there is little air circulation, however our boxes
already have provision for air circulation. Keep checking for the ripe ones
regularly & refrigerate them if they are to be consumed at a later date.
Can we refrigerate the Mangoes?
We usually dispatch the mangoes Semi-ripe to avoid
damages during transit. Semi-ripe mangoes if refrigerated will never
ripe. Once mangoes are ripe, they can be refrigerated to increase the shelf
life.
What are the black spots?
Some mangoes develop black spots/dots on the skin
or near the tip of the mango, it indicates high sugar content. Some marks on
the mangoes are due to the branches touching them & it’s a natural blemish.
What is spongy tissue in Alphonso?
It’s a natural disorder very common to Alphonso
where some part of it becomes soft inside. The mango looks good from outside,
but is spongy inside which is obvious only when it is ripe. One can consume the
remaining part of the mango. As we are organic & have post-harvest
techniques in place the occurrence is minimum.
